FALLEN ANGEL SEEKS NEW HOME

This little darlin' may be a little bumped & bruised & soiled but to us she remains a perfect little angel. If you wish to open your home & heart to her she can be found at Camp Ho-Ba-Chee in Warkworth.

What's In A Name

Have we ever told you how we got our name?

It all started when we fell in love with this great sign.

We were at an antique show in Lakefield shortly after moving into the area. We bought this sign from one of the show vendors and it hung in our living room for several years.  All we were able to learn at the time was that the sign came from a camp in the Haliburton area in the 1950's.

A few years later we decided to open an antique and vintage shop. We loved the Camp Ho-Ba-Chee sign and the fun, nostalgic and carefree spirit that it represented so it seemed a perfect fit for our shop name.

We opened our doors in Warkworth in August 2011 and that Fall Rita Zekas did an article on the village and its shops for The Toronto Star. The day the article came out we received an e-mail from a man in Toronto whose father was one of two co-founders of the original Camp Ho-Ba-Chee. Through him we were able to discover that camp had been a boys camp in Haliburton on Big Brother Lake from 1948, 49 and 50. The name Camp Ho-Ba-Chee apparently translated to Camp Many Echoes.

Now you know the rest of the story! S'mores anyone?

TOO COOL! Vintage Surveyors Rod

We just got in this great vintage surveyors rod. We LOVE the graphic pop it adds to any interior and the nice industrial edge it provides. We understand this is known as a Philadelphia rod.

The two piece telescoping pole would be sighted by the surveyor to obtain the needed measurement. The "target, shown in detail below, slides up or down until it matches the surveyors line of sight.

Here are some vintage images of surveyor rods in use:

The article, Vases for Your Valentine (or Your Home!) included a vintage West German Bay Keramik vase of ours which we had posted on Etsy.
Our vase has since sold thanks to the added exposure from the article.

Happy 2011 - It's Gonna Be A Good One

We are excited about the new year.
                      New beginnings,
                             dreams unfolding,
                                     a year of possibilities.

Feels good getting organized,

making time for all that we want to do - work, play, discover, create, share, savour.

To live in the moment rather than waiting for tomorrow.

To be enlightened and light of heart.

What does the new year mean for you?

Welcome!

Welcome to the Camp Ho-Ba-Chee blog.

On July 1, 2010 Camp Ho-Ba-Chee launched a new location in an antique co-op called Nostalgic Journey located on Hwy 7 just east of Peterborough, Ontario.

In less than 24 hours we transformed a bare empty space with a gray concrete floor
into a lovely, fresh and inviting space that Martha would approve of.

First we painted the floor with a checkerboard pattern.

Then we brought in the display elements - an antique wooden door and screen door, a whitewashed pantry cupboard from an old cottage, a drop leaf table which was a family piece, and some colourful painted furniture.

And then the goodies came out. It was fun arranging the pieces we had brought into themes and colour blocks. Here's our debut:

If you're in the area come check us out. Nostalgic Journey is open 7 days a week July thru August.
